Olszewski, an assistant professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “Don’t put up blockades or shut them down when they try to ask or communicate this curiosity,” she says. And, above all, be honest and genuine with your answers.”

My kids have already been exposed to death, attended funerals, lost a school mate in a terrible accident, and I am a social worker who works with older adults.

They know they can talk to me about anything including death. I make a point to tell them everything will die; the trees, the flowers, grass, animals and even us eventually. Make the most of the time you have. Be respectful, kind, empathic to others…
