We need to admit that sometimes we do not know what to say. For someone who recently had a loved one die wishing them ‘Happy Holidays’ might not be a good choice. Instead one could say: “I know it is holiday time and your ………recently died. How are you doing?” (and really listen) or be honest: “I am not sure what to say. I want you to know I am thinking of you.”
Instead of ignoring or saying something that could offend or be hurtful-put yourself in their shoes. What would you want someone to say to you? To offer?
